This report, compiled by Everytown for Gun Safety, provides an analysis of recent mass shootings in the United States that occurred during the period January 2009 through July 2014.
Abstract
Highlights of the report's findings include the following: less than 1 percent of gun murder victims recorded by the FBI in 2012 were victims of mass shootings; mass shootings occurred fairly regularly, with no more than 3 months between events; 51 percent of mass shooting victims were female compared to 13 percent of total gun homicide victims; perpetrators of mass shootings tended to be older than perpetrators of gun violence in general; and the use of assault weapons or high-capacity magazines resulted in 156 percent more people being shot than in other incidents and 63 percent more people being killed than in other incidents. Data for this report were obtained from the FBI's (Federal Bureau of Investigation's) Supplementary Homicide Reports for the years 2009-2012 and media reports containing information about mass shootings for that occurred in 2013-2014. Analysis of the data identified 110 mass shootings that occurred in 36 States over the nearly 6-year period. As noted in the report, a mass shooting is defined by the FBI as any incident where at least four people are murdered with a gun. The report contains a listing of the mass shooting incidents identified during the period 2009-2014 with the following information provided for each incident: location of the shooting, number of people killed and/or injured, and information on the shooter, gun(s), ammunition, and gun purchase.
