EVALUATION OF A SPECIAL OPERATIONS BUREAU DESIGNED TO REDUCE STREET CRIME BY CONCENTRATING POLICE MANPOWER IN HIGH CRIME AREAS.
Abstract
BASED UPON EVIDENCE COLLECTED FROM THE DAYTON POLICE DEPARTMENT, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE TEAM POLICING EXPERIMENT HAS MADE SOME NOTABLE STEPS TOWARD THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MORE COMMUNITY-CENTERED POLICE DEPARTMENT. IN ADDITION, THE OFFICERS IN THE EXPERIMENT HAVE ANSWERED MORE DISPATCH CALLS THAN THEIR COUNTERPARTS IN OTHER DISTRICTS, ACHIEVED AN OVERALL CLEARANCE RATE SIMILAR TO THE CLEARANCE RATE IN AN EARLIER TIME PERIOD, RESPONDED AND APPREHENDED SUSPECTS AS RAPIDLY AS IN THE EARLIER TIME PERIOD AND HAVE ACHIEVED AN OVERALL SUCCESSFUL PROSECUTION RATE SIMILAR TO THAT ACHIEVED BY THE ENTIRE POLICE DEPARTMENT DURING 1969 AND 1970.
