The analysis of information is a central part of law enforcement work and requires increased attention in training programs.
Abstract
The field of intelligence analysis has grown sharply in recent years, with an increasing focus on complex crimes and the need to analyze varying types of data. Analytical training is offered by the FBI National Academy program and through other projects, but local police academies do not routinely include it in their programs for police recruits. Training courses in analysis should be carefully developed and should use case material. Instructors should avoid using another instructor's material, being too technical, or providing courses that are overly specialized. They should also review the course materials before the class begins so that they can respond adequately to questions. To be effective in the future, analytical training needs a formal structure to aid in its development, must train analysis instructors, and develop new models and curricula in computerized analysis and emerging analytical techniques.
