A NEW STRUCTURAL APPROACH MODEL OF DELINQUENT CRIME CAUSATION.
Abstract
INSTEAD OF THE OLD EMPHASIS ON CHANGING THE INDIVIDUAL OFFENDER, THE NEW MOVEMENT STRESSES CHANGING THE MANNER IN WHICH VARIOUS SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS, INCLUDING COURTS AND CORRECTIONAL AGENCIES, RELATE TO HIM. THE CAUSES OF DELINQUENCY AND YOUTH CRIME IN PARTICULAR ARE SOUGHT IN CONDITIONS OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL INEQUALITY, ESPECIALLY IN LACK OF ECONOMIC AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY, RATHER THAN SOLELY IN INDIVIDUAL PATHOLOGY AND PERSONAL FAILURE. THE DYSFUNCTIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF BUREAUCRATIC DECISIONS AND PRACTICES FOR THE DISADVANTAGED ARE GIVEN CLOSE SCRUTINY.
