TYPES OF WAGERS THAT BETTORS MAY PLACE WITH BOOKIES ON FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL GAMES ARE EXPLAINED AND THE RECORDKEEPING PARAPHERNALIA OF BOOKIES IS DESCRIBED IN AN ARTICLE DIRECTED TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS.
Abstract
THE ARTICLE OPENS WITH EXPLANATIONS OF STRAIGHT BETS, PARLAY BETS, ROUND ROBINS, IF BETS, OVER AND UNDER BETS, TEASER BETS, AND HALF-TIME WAGERS--ALL TYPES OF BETS THAT MAY BE PLACED ON FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL GAMES. GAMBLING JARGON USED BY BOOKIES AND BETTORS WHEN THEY TALK ON THE TELEPHONE IS TRANSLATED. THE VARIOUS RECORDS KEPT BY BOOKIES ARE DESCRIBED, INCLUDING WAGER SLIPS, ACCOUNTING RECORDS, AND REFERENCE MATERIALS (E.G., LINE SHEETS, SPORTS RECORD BOOKS, WEATHER INFORMATION, HANDICAPPING AIDS). A TYPICAL WAGER SLIP IS ILLUSTRATED, AND EACH ENTRY ON THE SLIP IS EXPLAINED. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT THE BEST EVIDENCE IN AN ILLEGAL GAMBLING CASE IS THE RECORDED WAGER ITSELF. THE EXTENSIVE INFORMATION THAT CAN BE GLEANED FROM THOROUGH EXAMINATIONS OF WAGERING RECORDS, SUCH AS THOSE CONDUCTED REGULARLY BY GAMBLING EXPERTS IN THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION LABORATORY DIVISION, IS NOTED.
