THIS ANTHOLOGY PRESENTS THE HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF ANARCHISM IN THE SELECTED WRITINGS OF ITS ADVOCATES AND OBSERVERS, FROM DIDEROT TO CAMUS, FROM THOREAU TO VANZETTI.
Abstract
PRECEDING THE ORIGINAL SELECTIONS, AN INTRODUCTION TO ANARCHIST HISTORY DISCUSSES NATURAL MAN VERSUS POLITICAL MAN, THE ANARCHIST AMBIGUITY, A TYPOLOGY OF ANARCHIST STRATEGIES AND BELIEFS, AND THE REVOLUTIONARY DEED AND THE REDEMPTIVE SPIRIT. ANARCHISM AS A CRITIQUE OF SOCIETY IS REPRESENTED BY SELECTIONS FROM SUCH WELL-KNOWN WRITERS AS DENIS DIDEROT, PIERRE JOSEPH PROUDHON, MICHAEL BAKUNIN, AND PETER KROPOTKIN. ANARCHISM AS A STYLE OF LIFE IS ENCOMPASSED BY THE THOUGHTS OF SUCH DIVERSE PERSONALITIES AND JOSEPH CONRAD, FYODOR DOSTOYEVSKY, LEO TOLSTOY, ALBERT CAMUS, EMMA GOLDMAN, AND SACCO AND VANZETTI. AS A SYSTEM OF PHILOSOPHY, ANARCHISM IS PRESENTED THROUGH THE IDEAS OF MAX STRINER, HENRY DAVID THOREAU, JOSIAH WARREN, WILLIAM ERNEST HOCKING, HERBERT READ, AND PAUL ARTHUR SCHLIPP. THE HISTORICAL DIMENSION IS SHOWN BY WRITERS' OBSERVATIONS OF ANARCHIST EVENTS IN SPAIN, ITALY, THE U.S., FRANCE, RUSSIA, EUROPE, AND LATIN AMERICA. FINALLY, THE SOCIOLOGICAL DIMENSION OF ANARCHISM IS HIGHLIGHTED BY THE WRITINGS OF GEORGES SOREL, PAUL GOODMAN, PHILLIP SELZNICK, AND KARL SHAPIRO. A POSTSCRIPT AND NAME AND SUBJECT INDEX ARE INCLUDED. (PRG)
