HISTORY OF INJUSTICES AND IN EQUALITIES SUFFERED BY MEXICAN AMERICANS IN THE UNITED STATES FROM 1845 TO 1971 INCLUDING PROBLEMS OF POLICE BRUTALITY, POLICE DEPLOYMENT IN MEXICAN-AMERICAN AREAS, AND DISCRIMINATION IN THE LAW.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR STRESSES THAT MEXICAN AMERICANS HAVE NOT REMAINED SILENT AND PASSIVE ABOUT SOCIAL INJUSTICES AGAINST THEM. HE ALSO STRESSES THE IDEA THAT THE POLICE FORCE, WHICH COMES FROM OUTSIDE THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY, CANNOT AND DOES NOT PROTECT THE PEOPLE OF THAT COMMUNITY. AS A RESULT, MANY RESIDENTS FEEL SUBJUGATED AND POWERLESS. AN ACCOUNT IS GIVEN OF THE EAST LOS ANGELES RIOTS IN 1970 AND 1971. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
