This book is designed to assist an instructor in teaching a small group of adolescents anger-management techniques.
Abstract
Although the training is intended for use in high schools, it can be adapted for diverse practice settings, such as community mental health centers, public health clinics, and juvenile detention centers. Session activities can be adapted for a wide range of ages and various ethnic groups. The introduction provides a brief history of the program's development and discusses key concepts about anger and anger management, followed by a description of the model used. It also identifies leader competencies for both the group counseling and skills training approaches that are integrated in the instruction. The overall program goals, objectives, and module content are described and diagrammed. A chapter on "getting started" provides practical information for establishing a group. Key considerations and sample activities are provided for getting the group started. A chapter profiles each module. Background information and group-implementation plans and activities are provided. The modules are presented in a sequence that fosters group development and anger-management skills training: assessment, skills building within the group, and skills application and transfer beyond the group. The appendix contains a number of tools for helping group members monitor their progress, stay on track, and celebrate successes. 60 references
