THIS BOOK, PREPARED BY LONDON'S INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF CONFLICT, DESCRIBES THE ACTIONS OF IMPORTANT EXTREMIST GROUPS, REVOLUTIONARY AND NONREVOLUTIONARY, IN 64 COUNTRIES DURING 1975 AND EARLY 1976.
Abstract
THE VOLUME IS PREFACED BY A REVIEW OF THE SOVIET UNION'S SUCCESSES DURING THE PREVIOUS DECADE, STRENGTHENING ITS REVOLUTIONARY BASE, PURSUING AN EXPANSIONIST POLICY, AND CONTINUING ITS ARMS BUILDUP; AND ALL THIS DONE AGAINST A BACKGROUND OF 'DETENTE' AND A CRISIS IN THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNIST MOVEMENT. THE COUNTRY-BY-COUNTRY SURVEY IS DIVIDED BY REGIONS--NONCOMMUNIST EUROPE, COMMUNIST EUROPE, LATIN AMERICA, ETC.--AND COVERS CURRENT FORM OF GOVERNMENT, POPULATION, ARMED FORCES, AND REVOLUTIONARY CHALLENGES AND EVENTS DURING THE PERTINENT TIME PERIOD. EACH REGIONAL GROUP LISTING IS PRECEDED BY AN OVERVIEW OF THE STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK WITHIN WHICH EACH GROUP RESIDES, INFLUENCED BY POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, AND CULTURAL EVENTS. THE EVENTS PROBABLE EFFECTS ON THE INTERESTS OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION, THE U.S., SOVIET UNION, WARSAW PACT, AND CHINA ARE ASSESSED. FRANCE, FOR EXAMPLE EXPERIENCED THREATS TO INTERNAL SECURITY MAINLY FROM SEPARATIST OR IMMIGRATION CLASHES; SEVERAL TERRORIST INCIDENTS AS WELL AS A CORSICAN CALL TO REVOLUTION OCCURRED. OVERALL, THE YEAR WAS CHARACTERIZED BY MANY COUNTRIES' CHANGES IN THE RULING POWER BROUGHT ABOUT THROUGH MILITARY ACTION, COMMUNIST AGGRESSION, OR REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS. AN INDEX OF COUNTRIES AND AN APPENDIX LISTS, FOR EACH COUNTRY, THE NAME, POLITICAL OR PHILOSOPHICAL ORIENTATION, AND STATUS OF EACH EXTREMIST MOVEMENT ARE PROVIDED. (CFW)
