This report presents 1994 information and statistics on Indiana's Commission on Courts, which reviews and reports on all requests for new courts or changes in the jurisdiction of existing courts.
Abstract
The Commission also conducts research on requests for new courts or changes in jurisdiction of existing courts. This research may include the conduct of surveys that sample members of the bar, members of the judiciary, and local officials to determine needs and problems. The Commission holds public hearings throughout the State to hear requests for new courts or changes in the jurisdiction of existing courts. One public hearing is held on each request presented to the Commission. The Commission held six meetings following the conclusion of the 1994 General Assembly. The Commission divided the issues for consideration into the following categories: noncontroversial proposals from the 1994 session, new requests submitted to the Commission at the beginning of its deliberations for the 1994 interim, salary increases for judicial officers, and the election of judges in Lake and St. Joseph counties. A summary of testimony for each meeting is provided. Commission findings and recommendations pertain to court upgrades and organizational changes, previously approved requests for magistrates, new requests for courts and magistrates, judges compensation, Marion County court unification, civil legal aid, Tax Court and State Board of Tax Commissions, court funding, and the expansion of the Indiana Supreme Court.
