This annual report describes the mission, goals, and structure of the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the funding and technical assistance that BJA provided to State and local criminal justice systems in fiscal year 2000 to support initiatives in every area of the justice system.
Abstract
BJA provided nearly $2 billion in fiscal year 2000 to support initiatives related to crime prevention, community justice, law enforcement, pretrial services, prosecution and indigent defense, the courts, supervision services, technology and systems integration, and evaluation. BJA funded the implementation, evaluation, and replication of these efforts. The Byrne Memorial Grant Program and the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants program were the largest grant programs and emphasized local decision making. The State Criminal Alien Assistance Program was the first Federal effort to assist States and local governments with the cost of incarcerating undocumented criminal aliens. BJA also supported national, State, and local initiatives to meet emerging needs. BJA information dissemination efforts encompassed traditional publishing, electronic dissemination, and media public education campaigns. Funding in fiscal year 2000 supported community-based initiatives, efforts to address violent and serious crimes, State and local justice systems, underserved constituents, and technology initiatives. Figure; illustrations; and appended BJA legislative purpose area descriptions, lists of awards to States and territories, and publications during fiscal year 2000
