This 2009 Annual Report of the Columbus Division of Police (Ohio) provides information and data on the agency's activities, organizational development, personnel, equipment, and finances.
Abstract
Due to the economic downturn affecting the entire Nation in 2009, it was a tough year for Columbus; however, the Columbus Division of Police (CDP) enhanced neighborhood safety through significant initiatives such as the summer anti-gang initiative and the expansion of electronic online reporting for pawnshops. In 2009, a new police chief was installed in March. In late May and early June, the CDP held four community forums in which citizens voiced their concerns about public safety and police services. In addition, surveys were distributed to members of the community and CDP personnel. Responses from the forums and surveys have assisted in shaping CDP's planning. Regarding organizational development, CDP began preparing for the impending retirement of a significant number of experienced personnel. The challenge is to maintain the quality of leadership and effectiveness despite budgetary constraints. A key component of planning is to ensure diversity throughout the Division through the recruitment of women and minorities. The report contains an organizational chart; maps and crime and incident data for the five patrol zones; traffic data; and personnel data. Offense statistics by precinct encompass homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, and theft. The number of arrests per month for various offenses is reported, along with a 10-year comparison of arrests and offenses for Part I and Part II offenses. Data are also provided on telephone calls answered and incidents written up by the Communication Bureau. Data on demands for service are shown for each of the last 10 years by number of runs by units. An operating budget comparison is shown for 2009 and 2008.
