Legislators discuss national and international activities of the Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control and include recommendations on controlling the worldwide drug abuse problem.
Abstract
The Committee was established in 1976 as a fact-finding and coordinating body providing an overview of the drug abuse problem and focusing public and congressional attention on drug-related issues. Among its many activities was the securing of celebrities to publicize the drug problem and its negative effects, as well as suggestions for curtailing sentencing discretion in drug cases. The Committee also moved to strengthen bail laws and community drug prevention efforts. Its international activities included a study of drug abuse in the U.S. military in Italy and West Germany, as well as narcotics control strategies in Peru and Pakistan and efforts to gain UN support for a global drug control strategy.
