Abstract
THE CATEGORIES CONSIDERED IN THIS REPORT ARE: (1) FELONS COMMITTED TO THE STATE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM; (2) FELONS CONFINED IN THE STATE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM; (3) MISDEMEANANTS OR FELONS RECEIVING MISDEMEANANT SENTENCES COMMITTED TO THE MAJOR INSTITUTIONS, CORRECTIONAL FIELD UNITS, OR THE VIRGINIA CORRECTIONAL CENTER FOR WOMEN; (4) FELON RECIDIVISTS FROM VIRGINIA COMMITTED TO THE SYSTEM; (5) FELON RECIDIVISTS COMMITTED TO THE SYSTEM COMING FROM VIRGINIA OR ELSEWHERE; (6) FELON RECIDIVISTS FROM VIRGINIA CONFINED IN THE STATE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM; AND (7) FELON RECIDIVISTS COMING FROM VIRGINIA OR ELSEWHERE AND CONFINED IN THE SYSTEM. THE CHARACTERISTICS MOST GENERALLY NOTED ARE AGE, RACE, SEX, RELIGIOUS PREFERENCE, EDUCATIONAL LEVEL, INTELLIGENCE, STATUS OF PARENTS, AND MARITAL STATUS. OTHER DATA REPORTED INCLUDES JUVENILE RECORD OF THE OFFENDER, DRUG AND ALCOHOL HABITS, OFFENSE ACCORDING TO TERM AND SENTENCE, SENTENCE, PAROLE OR PARDON STATUS, AND LOCATION OF COMMITTING COURT. GRAPHS AND NARRATIVE ARE PROVIDED ON FELONS COMMITTED AND CONFINED IN THE VIRGINIA STATE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, AND THE APPENDIX CONTAINS AN EXPLANATION OF THE DATA SOURCE FOR THE ENTIRE REPORT.
