This report presents statistics on all persons sentenced to correctional institutions administered by the Hong Kong Correctional Services Department (CSD) in 2004.
Abstract
The types of correctional facilities managed by the CSD are prisons, drug addiction treatment centers, training centers, detention centers, and rehabilitation centers. In 2004 there were 30,070 admissions to all of these facilities, with 92.9 percent sentenced to prisons, 4.4 percent sentenced to drug addiction treatment centers, 0.6 percent sentenced to training centers, 1.2 percent sentenced to a detention center, and 0.9 percent sentenced to rehabilitation centers. The first section of the report provides an overview of the demographic, socioeconomic, and criminal characteristics of the sentenced offenders. This is followed by a section that presents key statistics on sentenced persons by correctional program. The third section presents statistics on drug addicts, and the fourth section provides selected comparative statistics for 2003 and 2004. Two appendixes describe various types of correctional programs and the classification of offenses. Charts show the historical trend of receptions to correctional institutions by major offender characteristics from 1984 to 2004.
