A REVIEW OF CAUSES AND GROWTH OF DRUG ABUSE, THE CHANNELS FOR ILLEGAL DRUG PRODUCTION AND IMPORT, AND TREATMENT AND RESEARCH PROJECTS FOR DEALING WITH DRUG ABUSE.
Abstract
THE INCREASING USE OF DRUGS, ESPECIALLY MARIJUANA, AMONG ALL POPULATION SECTORS IS DOCUMENTED AND REASONS FOR ITS USE, SUCH AS ESCAPE, THRILLS, OR PEER PRESSURE ARE SHOWN. THE GROWING USE OF HEROIN AND OTHER NARCOTICS IS TRACED, AND THROUGH INTERVIEWS WITH ADDICTS OR THOSE CLOSE TO DRUG ABUSERS, THE REASONS FOR AND DAMAGING EFFECTS OF THIS USE ARE DEMONSTRATED. EFFORTS TO HALT THIS INCREASE THROUGH STRICT PENALTIES BOTH IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD ARE SEEN AS INEFFECTIVE. PRIMARY CHANNELS FOR PRODUCING AND IMPORTING DRUGS, SUCH AS TURKEY, FRANCE, AND MEXICO ARE REVIEWED AND THE FILM STRESSES THE LARGE AMOUNTS OF NARCOTICS WHICH ENTER THE UNITED STATES IN SPITE OF CONTROL EFFORTS. TREATMENT, RESEARCH, AND REHABILITATION EFFORTS, SUCH AS THE ADDICTION RESEARCH CENTER IN LEXINGTON, METHADONE TREATMENT CENTERS, OR RESIDENTIAL THERAPY AND REHABILITATION PROGRAMS ARE SHOWN. UNDERSTANDING THE DRUG ABUSER AND ATTACKING ILLEGAL SOURCES OF DRUGS ARE SEEN AS THE MOST IMPORTANT MOVES IN FIGHTING DRUG ABUSE.
