Abstract
Recent surveys show declines in teenage use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. Apparently, parents and teachers are playing a crucial role in this trend. The focus is on marijuana because it is the illicit drug most used and abused by young people, and is the substance that students in grades 8 through 12 are most likely to have used. The main objective of Lesson Plan 1 is to show students the importance of evaluating information and finding trustworthy sources of information about marijuana. Lesson Plan 2 provides information about resolving dilemmas relating to peer pressure and identifying personal ways to making the right decisions. Lesson Plan 3 raises awareness of the fact that most adolescents do not use drugs. Lesson Plan 4 describes how marijuana affects the brain as well as the addictive potential. The objective of Lesson Plan 5 is to describe the addictive qualities and the dangerous health effects of cigarettes and marijuana. Lesson Plan 6 teaches the skills of resisting peer pressure. Lesson Plan 7 describes the dangers of drinking, using drugs, and driving. In Lesson Plan 8, the focus is on the violence and criminal activity associated with drug trafficking. Lesson Plan 9 discusses how the media purveys popular culture and the influence this has on youth. Lesson Plan 10 examines the messages about marijuana being communicated by popular culture through the media. In Lesson Plan 11, elements of advertising structure and content are identified, and anti-drug ads are examined. Lesson Plan 12 identifies the differences between advertising aimed at adults and targeting teenagers, and positive ways to communicate with parents. Appendix
