EIGHT FILMS ON TERRORISM COUNTERMEASURES ARE REVIEWED BY A SAMPLE OF UNIVERSITY CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDENTS, USING A STANDARD INSTRUMENT.
Abstract
THERE WERE 25 STUDENTS, INCLUDING 4 FEMALES IN THE SAMPLE OF FILM REVIEWERS. THE STUDENTS WERE INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN OF THE REVIEW INSTRUMENT, WHICH CONSISTED OF NINE ATTITUDINAL STATEMENTS AND SPACE FOR ADDITIONAL COMMENT. THE INSTRUMENT PROVIDED FOR RATINGS OF EACH FILM IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: APPROPRIATENESS OF THE TITLE FOR THE PRESENTATION, THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE KNOWLEDGE PRESENTED PROVOKES THOUGHT AND DISCUSSION, THE REALISM OF THE PRESENTATION, THE ORGANIZATION OF THE MATERIAL, TECHNICAL QUALITY, AN OVERALL EVALUATION, AND WHETHER THE FILM IS MOST APPROPRIATE FOR POLICE OFFICERS, PRIVATE CITIZENS, OR SECURITY OFFICERS. THE FILMS REVIEWED WERE 'POSTMARK: TERROR,' SURVIVING HOSTAGE SITUATIONS,' 'KIDNAPPING EXECUTIVE STYLE,' 'BOMB THREAT: DON'T PANIC,' 'PUBLIC OFFICIAL PROTECTION,' 'THREAT: CAR BOMB,' 'DRIVE FOR YOUR LIFE,' AND 'VEHICLE AMBUSH COUNTER-ATTACKS.' STUDENT REVIEWERS PRAISED THE FILMS MORE THAN THEY CONDEMNED THEM. SECURITY OFFICERS WERE VIEWED AS THE MOST APPROPRIATE AUDIENCE FOR SEVEN OF THE FILMS, AND PRIVATE CITIZENS WERE CONSIDERED THE LOGICAL AUDIENCE FOR VIEWING 'SURVIVING HOSTAGE SITUATIONS.' IN NO CASE WERE POLICE OFFICERS RANKED HIGH AS AN AUDIENCE FOR THE FILMS. TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED, ALONG WITH A SAMPLE OF A POSTER USED, THE REVIEW INSTRUMENT, AND FOOTNOTES. (RCB)
