A DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANNING EFFORTS UNDERTAKEN IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW POLICE FACILITIES IN APPLETON (WI), AND AN OVERVIEW OF THE DESIGN FEATURES OF THE NEW POLICE STATION ARE PROVIDED IN THIS DOCUMENT.
Abstract
PLANNING FOR THIS FACILITY INVOLVED SITE SELECTION BY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE CITY GOVERNMENT, AND COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVES, AND A STUDY OF SHORT- AND LONG-RANGE FACILITY REQUIREMENTS AND COST PROJECTIONS BY THE POLICE FORCE AND A CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE. TWO MAJOR GOALS FOR THE FACILITY WERE IDENTIFIED: IT SHOULD BE DESIGNED WITH UTMOST FLEXIBILITY TO PROVIDE CONTINUED OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS; AND IT SHOULD BE DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO PROMOTE IMPROVED POLICE/ COMMUNITY RELATIONS. FEATURES OF THE NEW FACILITY INCLUDE: A MINIMUM OF PERMANENT INTERIOR WALLS; THE DEFINITION OF MOST OFFICE AREAS BY MEANS OF FULL-HEIGHT MOVABLE WALLS; AND THE USE OF PORTABLE WORK STATIONS WHICH CAN BE EXPANDED OR REARRANGED TO MEET CHANGING REQUIREMENTS. FIXED FUNCTIONS SUCH AS EVIDENCE STORAGE OR TEMPORARY HOLDING AREAS ARE GROUPED WITHIN THE STRUCTURE'S ONLY PERMANENT INTERIOR WALLS. THE DESIGN ALSO PROVIDES EASY COMMUNITY ACCESS TO OFFICES FREQUENTLY VISITED BY CITIZENS, AND IS DECORATED IN A MODERN AND PLEASANT MANNER. FINALLY, THE BUILDING CONTAINS SUCH SPECIAL FEATURES AS AN EXERCISE ROOM, STAFF LIBRARY, AND STAFF LOUNGE.
