Abstract
The study shows that Mentype Argus X-8 represents a set of additional markers which can be useful for forensic investigations in particular cases. Interpretation of forensic parentage examinations may sometimes be very problematic. Chromosome X STR markers constitute a valuable addition to autosomal, ChrY and mtDNA markers, which are routinely used in forensic identification studies. Due to a specific inheritance mode of chromosome X, analysis of ChrX markers may be particularly useful in deficiency paternity and some kinship cases. This paper presents population data for STR systems included in the Mentype Argus X-8 kit obtained for a population sample from southern Poland. Mentype Argus X-8 is a commercial kit, which enables simultaneous analysis of eight STR systems located on chromosome X and additionally also amelogenin as a sex marker. The paper also shows some examples of casework analyses including identification of human remains and incest cases and discusses benefits and drawbacks associated with Chr-X STRs as forensic identification markers.
