THIS REPORT DISCUSSES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW POLICE SELECTION EXAM AND A PROPOSED METHOD OF VALIDATING THIS EXAM TO SEE THAT IT ACTUALLY MEASURES JOB-RELATED ABILITIES.
Abstract
A COURT ORDER TO DEVELOP AN EXAM THAT WAS BASED ON JOB RELATED CRITERIA WAS GIVEN BECAUSE IN 1970, OF THOSE WHO TOOK THE MASSACHUSETTS TEST, ONLY 10 PERCENT OF THE SPANISH AND 25 PERCENT OF THE BLACK APPLICANTS PASSED WHILE 65 PERCENT OF THE WHITE APPLICANTS PASSED. A NEW TEST WAS DEVELOPED AND ADMINISTERED IN 1972. A LIST OF VALIDATION CRITERIA IS PRESENTED, AND THE FORM FOR EVALUATING THOSE OFFICERS THAT WERE APPOINTED AS A RESULT OF THE 1972 TEST IS APPENDED.
