Abstract
THE MANUAL EMPHASIZES THAT EFFECTIVE RETAIL CRIME PREVENTION CAN ONLY START WHEN RETAILERS KNOW HOW TO PROSECUTE AND APPREHEND RETAIL THIEVES. DISCUSSION OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF SHOPLIFTING LAWS IS ACCOMPANIED BY AN EXPLANATION OF THE LANGUAGE OF THE LAW. PRACTICAL GUIDELINES ARE GIVEN FOR OBSERVING THE CRIME AND APPREHENDING, ARRESTING, OR DETAINING SUSPECTS. INVESTIGATION DURING DETENTION OR AFTER ARREST IS DISCUSSED. POINTERS ARE OFFERED FOR FILING COMPLAINTS, FOR PROCEEDING WITH THE PROSECUTION, AND FOR AVOIDING LAWSUITS IN THE AREAS OF FALSE ARREST, FALSE IMPRISONMENT, MALICIOUS PROSECUTION, ASSAULT AND BATTERY, AND SLANDER.
