This document provides guidelines for individuals seeking funding support for juvenile restitution programs from elected local and State officials.
Abstract
After researching the background and interests of an official likely to be sympathetic, the fundseeker must develop a constituency and choose an effective and knowledgeable spokesperson. Prior to approaching an official, the fundseeker should have a sound understanding of the political climate and possible budgetary concerns, a knowledge of current legislative policy, and a strategy for responding to potential concerns and questions regarding the costs versus benefits of restitution. In preparing a proposal for funds, it is important that terms be defined; that the universe of need be identified; and that the philosophy, goals, and type of program (direct victim or community service) be described. Finally, publicity and goodwill should be cultivated through publication of articles, editorials, newsletters, and letters of thanks. 3 footnotes.
