A DAY BY DAY ACCOUNT OF A PRISON RIOT IN WHICH THE INMATES TOOK OVER, AND THEN TORTURED ANOTHER GROUP OF INMATES BEFORE RELINQUISHING CONTROL OF THE BUILDING.
Abstract
DURING THE LAST OF THE APRIL 1971 KINGSTON PENITENTIARY RIOT, A GROUP OF INMATE 'UNDESIRABLES' (SEX OFFENDERS AND INFORMANTS) WERE DRAGGED FROM THEIR CELLS, TIED TO CHAIRS IN A CIRCLE, AND VICIOUSLY ASSAULTED BY ANOTHER GROUP OF INMATES. THE ASSAULT TOOK PLACE ON THE DOME FLOOR OF THE PRISON IN FRONT OF THE INMATE POPULATION, AND RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF TWO PRISONERS. FOLLOWING THE RIOT, THE KINGSTON POLICE FORCE CONDUCTED AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE DEATHS AND BROUGHT CHARGES OF NON-CAPITAL MURDER AGAINST THIRTEEN CONVICTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT) --SUMMARY IN FRENCH
