TASK FORCE REPORT ILLUSTRATES HOW CONDITIONS AND GOALS OF WASHINGTON AREA CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM STAND UP, AND INCLUDES RECOMMENDATIONS ON ARCHDIOCESE COOPERATION WITH THAT SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE TASK FORCE DID NOT SEE ITSELF AS PUBLISHING A POSITION PAPER ON WHICH WAY THE CHURCH SHOULD MOVE ON THIS SUBJECT, BUT RATHER AS INFORMING THE CHURCH'S PASTORAL COMMISSION OF WHAT FACTORS IT OUGHT TO CONSIDER. MEMBERS OF THE TASK FORCE VISITED THE MAJOR CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES IN THE WASHINGTON AREA, AND HELD BIWEEKLY MEETINGS TO DISCUSS WHAT THEY OBSERVED. RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE TASK FORCE COVERED SEVERAL AREAS. THE GROUP URGED THE PARISH COUNCIL, AMONG OTHER THINGS, TO MAKE AN EFFORT TO GET EMPLOYERS TO HIRE EX-OFFENDERS, TO BE FORCEFUL IN SPEAKING TO LAWMAKERS AND OTHERS REGARDING LEGAL JUSTICE ISSUES, AND TO GIVE IMMEDIATE ATTENTION TO JAIL OVERCROWDING. THERE WERE OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS ON ESTABLISHING AN OFFICE ON JUSTICE AND CORRECTIONS, AS WELL AS PROPOSALS FOR INDIVIDUAL PRIEST, DEACONS, AND CATHOLICS TO TAKE....BS
