POEMS AND EXCERPTS FROM INTERVIEWS WITH 50 YOUNG WOMEN INVOLVED WITH NEW DIRECTIONS FOR YOUNG WOMEN ARE REPRINTED.
Abstract
NEW DIRECTIONS FOR YOUNG WOMEN ORIGINATED IN PIMA COUNTY (ARIZONA) AS PART OF A LARGER EXPERIMENT TO DEAL WITH JUVENILE DELINQUENCY (DRUG ABUSE, SEXUAL DELINQUENCY, AND TRUANCY) OUTSIDE THE COURT SYSTEM. WITH NEW DIRECTIONS FOR YOUNG WOMEN, THE DEINSTITUTIONALIZATION OF FEMALE STATUS OFFENDERS IS INCORPORATED INTO THE BROADER CONTEXT OF THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT AND HELPS YOUNG WOMEN TO FIND THEIR ROLE IN TODAY'S SOCIETY. THE YOUNG WOMEN INTERVIEWED HAVE BEEN ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE ORGANIZATION FOR THE PAST 18 MONTHS. THEY ARE OF VARIED BACKGROUND (BLACK, INDIAN, ANGLO-AMERICAN, AND MEXICAN-AMERICAN), AND THEIR AGE RANGES FROM 13 TO 18 YEARS. SOME COME FROM GROUP HOMES, FOSTER HOMES, AND DETENTION CENTERS; OTHERS HAVE A 'NORMAL HOME.' MANY OF THEM ARE HIGH-SCHOOL DROPOUTS. THE POEMS AND INTERVIEWS COVER SUCH TOPICS AS FAMILY, SCHOOL, FRIENDS, DRUGS AND ALCOHOL, SEXUALITY, CAREER AND LIFE PLANS, SOCIAL ISSUES, AND YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS. A SHORT BIBLIOGRAPHY FOCUSING ON FEMINISM AND JUVENILE DELINQUENCY IS APPENDED. (SAJ)
