This article reviews the benefits and costs of designing and maintaining a Web site.
Abstract
With more than 40 million users, the World Wide Web offers boundless opportunities. It reaches a limitless audience and provides interactive technology and vast resources. A Web site can provide browsers with e-mail addresses, phone numbers, information on correctional facilities in distant locations, details on facility planning and construction, job opportunities, a list of probation or parole violators and their photographs, research data, catalogs, chat groups and forums. No other medium can achieve this as easily or inexpensively. The article discusses how corrections professionals can realize seven major advantages to developing a Web site: Awareness, Cost Savings, Community Outreach, Equal Footing, Recruitment, Public Relations, and Instant Audience. Of special interest to corrections professionals throughout the world is the American Correctional Association's Web site, where browsers can find information on membership, publications, accreditation, conventions and professional development. The article provides suggestions on the costs for a basic Web page design and posting, how to get started, requirements for a successful Web page, and maintenance options. References
