The driver training program used by the Edmonton Police Department in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is described and the Emergency and High Speed Driving Course is delineated.
Abstract
The program began in 1971 and consists of four phases: Driver Assessment, in which the new recruit is given a driver evaluation test during the first week of employment; Phase Two, consisting of 8 hours of classroom presentation covering the Alberta Safety Council Defensive Driving Course; Phase Three, consisting of 20 hours of training based on the material contained in the Department's Operations Manual, Part 8, Section E; and Phase Four, the Emergency and High Speed Driving Course, a 20-hour training program conducted at the Edmonton International Speedway. The course tests confidence and coordination in close driving situations, student reaction when faced with an emergency situation, the sharp turn maneuver, high speed lane change, evasive and controlled braking, and emergency driving. Remedial training as given for members who fail to meet the required qualification standards for the course and great emphasis is placed on safety in driving, stopping vehicles, and officer-violator contact. Departments wishing to develop driver training programs should consider the specific needs of the department, facilities that will best meet program requirements, and the recruitment and selection of instructors. Tabular data and photographs are included.
