This report presents the highlights of the Arizona Department of Public Safety in 1990-1991. The Department enforces State laws with primary responsibility in the areas of traffic, narcotics, organized crime and racketeering, liquor licensing, and other regulatory functions.
Abstract
The report describes five priority missions undertaken during the reporting period. To advance motorist safety, the Department targeted DUI offenses, implemented an accident reduction program aimed at commercial vehicles, and promoted the use of seatbelts. Its crime fighting strategy focused on reorganizing investigative forces, supporting allied enforcement, continuing the war on drugs, expanding efforts against gangs, and providing other crime fighting assistance. The third priority area was to provide exceptional technical, scientific, operational, and training services to other criminal justice agencies. The Department built up an administrative and operational network committed to maximizing every resource in the pursuit of these goals. Laser speed measuring devices, the cargo tank inspection program, the Alcohol Data Acquisition Management System, National Guard assistance, and the Criminal History Improvement Program indicate the directions the Department will pursue in the coming year. This report also provides statistics on the Department's personnel, criminal investigations, administration, Highway Patrol operations, support services, and telecommunications.
