This report presents Arizona’s Drug, Gang and Violent Crime Control Strategy for 2004-2007.
Abstract
Four major problems have been identified in the State of Arizona, which is part of the four State Southwest Border High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA): (1) direct influx of illicit drugs into Arizona from other countries; (2) continuing drug gang activity and related violence; (3) illicit drug demand and consumption within Arizona; and (4) marijuana growing and methamphetamine production. Arizona has identified a critical need for the 16 multi-jurisdictional, multi-agency tasks forces and their tandem supporting projects and for criminal justice records improvement. Arizona’s greatest area of need is within its eight HIDTA counties. Under Arizona’s 2004-2007 Drug Control Strategy, Arizona’s first priority is a statewide, system-wide, enhanced drug, gang, and violent crime control effort maintained by multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional drug, gang, and violent crime control task forces. Two additional priorities include: support of a criminal justice records improvement program and to support forensic laboratories, drug and violent offender detention, and court adjudication. All these priorities are intended to support the national strategy and disrupt the drug market. Five program areas will receive funding; multi-jurisdictional, multi-agency task forces and their tandem prosecution projects, adjudication, detention, forensic laboratories, and criminal justice records improvement.
