This report summarizes findings from the 2010 Arizona Youth Survey (AYS) administered to 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students during spring 2010 in Scottsdale, AZ.
Abstract
This survey was designed to assess data on school safety, adolescent substance use, antisocial behavior, and the risk and protective factors that predict these adolescent problem behaviors. The results specific to the city of Scottsdale are presented and compared to the results collected for all of the surveyed cities in Arizona. Provided is a section on how to best use the data. It states that Scottsdale should first identify the levels of risk and protection that are higher or lower than those in other communities. The risk factors that are higher than the Bach Harrison Norm and the protective factors that are lower than the Bach Harrison Norm are probably the factors that Scottsdale should consider addressing when planning prevention programs. Seven categories of charts are presented in this report: lifetime and 30 day alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use; heavy substance use and antisocial behavior; gambling; risk profiles; protective profiles; where youth acquired alcohol; and school safety. Other sections explore partnerships and models, including: the Risk and Protective Factor Model of Prevention; the Community Data Project; the Arizona Substance Abuse Partnership; Risk and Protective Factor Scale Definitions; School and Community Improvement Using Survey Data; and Contacts for Prevention.
