This report summarizes findings from the 2010 Arizona Youth Survey (AYS), which was administered to 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students during spring 2010 in order to obtain an assessment of school safety, adolescent substance use, antisocial behavior, and the risk and protective factors that predict these problem behaviors.
Abstract
The survey findings are valid and representative of the students in 8th, 10th, and 12th grades in Arizona. Seven types of data charts are presented: lifetime and 30-day use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; heavy substance use and antisocial behavior; gambling; risk profiles; protective profiles; where youth acquired alcohol; and school safety. Antisocial behavior pertains to any involvement during the past year with eight antisocial behaviors listed in the charts. Gambling behavior charts show the percentage of students who engaged in each of the 10 types of gambling "for money, possessions, or anything of value" during the past year. Risk and protective factor scales measure specific aspects of a youth's life experience that predict whether he/she will engage in problems behaviors. The scales are grouped into four domains: community, family, school, and peer/individual. The risk and protective factor charts show the percentage of students at risk and with protection for each of the scales. Another chart presents data regarding the ways that students obtained alcohol in the past 30 days. The school safety profile charts contain the percentages of students who felt unsafe at school or on the way to school, were threatened or injured with a weapon at school, were in a physical fight at school, carried a weapon to school, or were picked on or bullied at school. A number of tables and charts contain information useful for prevention planning. Extensive tables and charts
