ATTEMPT TO DESCRIBE THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARMED ROBBERY AS A CAREER.
Abstract
THE CAREER NOTION IS BASED UPON CERTAIN SIMILARLY PATTERNED SEQUENCES OF MOVEMENT IN THE SERIES OF CRIMES COMMITTED PRIOR TO APPREHENSION. THE AUTHOR IDENTIFIES THREE STEPS LEADING TO THE EMERGENCE OF THE CAREERIST EARLY ALIENATING OR ESTRANGING EXPERIENCES, THE POINT OF VULNERABILITY WHEN PERSONAL EVENTS HAVE BEEN ADVERSE AND THE PERSON STOPS TO TAKE STOCK OF HIS SITUATION, AND, FINALLY, INTERACTION WITH OTHERS WHO ARE EITHER ENGAGED IN ROBBERY OR ARE IN SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES, LIKEWISE READY TO ENGAGE IN ROBBERY. THE HISTORICAL EVOLUTION OF ROBBERY IS ALSO COVERED, FROM THE ROMANTIC HIGHWAYMAN OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY TO THE MODERN CAREER ROBBER, AS WELL AS SOCIETY'S REACTION - BOTH ITS CONCERN ABOUT ROBBERY AND ITS ADMIRATION FOR INDIVIDUAL ROBBERS. APPENDICES INCLUDE MATERIAL TO BE COVERED IN AN INTERVIEW, AND AN ACTUAL INTERVIEW. BIBLIOGRAPHY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
