ADULT AND JUVENILE ARREST STATISTICS FOR LOUISIANA IN 1977 AND 1978 ARE REPORTED BY THE LOUISIANA CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEM OF THE LOUISIANA COMMISSION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT FOR INFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC.
Abstract
THE REPORT SUPPLEMENTS THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ANALYSIS IN 'CRIME IN LOUISIANA, 1978.' DATA SHOW THAT ARRESTS WERE MOST PREVALENT IN THE STATE'S SEVEN STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS, WITH THE HEAVIEST CONCENTRATION IN NEW ORLEANS, AND THAT AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS AND ROBBERIES INCREASED IN NUMBER WHILE HOMICIDES, RAPES, BURGLARIES, LARCENY-THEFTS, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFTS DECREASED. FEMALE ARRESTS INCREASED IN 1978 BY 1.2 PERCENT OVER 1977 (AN INCREASE OF 5.5 PERCENT IN ADULT FEMALE ARRESTS AND A DECREASE OF 11.4 PERCENT FOR JUVENILE FEMALE ARRESTS), WITH LARCENY-THEFT AS THE MOST COMMON FEMALE OFFENSE. ADULT ARRESTS INCREASED BY 1 PERCENT OVER ARRESTS IN 1977, WITH RISES OF 10.4 PERCENT IN VIOLENT CRIME ARRESTS AND OF .9 PERCENT IN PROPERTY CRIME ARRESTS. ADULT CRIME ARRESTS PEAKED AT 18 YEARS OLD AND DIMINISHED IN ALL AGE CLASSIFICATIONS THEREAFTER. SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT OF THE INDIVIDUALS ARRESTED FOR INDEX CRIMES WERE BETWEEN 17 AND 29 YEARS OLD. THE NUMBER OF JUVENILE ARRESTS DROPPED 6.8 PERCENT FROM 1977 TO 1978 WITH A 2.1 PERCENT DECREASE IN VIOLENT CRIME ARRESTS AND AN 8.8 PERCENT DECREASE IN PROPERTY CRIME ARRESTS. ALL AGE GROUPS REFLECTED REDUCTIONS IN TOTAL ARRESTS. FIFTY PERCENT OR MORE OF JUVENILE ARRESTS FOR INDEX CRIMES AND 60 PERCENT FOR OTHER ARRESTS OCCURRED IN THE 15-TO-16-YEAR-OLD AGE CATEGORY. AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AND LARCENY-THEFT WERE THE MOST COMMON VIOLENT AND PROPERTY CRIMES FOR BOTH ADULTS AND JUVENILES. DATA TABLES, GRAPHS, AND MAPS ARE GIVEN. APPENDIXES CONTAIN DATA ON ARRESTS BY AGE AND WITH 1977-1978 COMPARATIVE STATISTICS BY MAJOR CRIME CLASSES, AGE, STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS, AND PARISH. --IN ENGLISH
