Abstract
The number of juvenile arrests in Wisconsin have remained relatively stable over the past 10 years; however, the juvenile arrest rate increased steadily from 1982 through 1986, before decreasing in 1987. Over the same period, the number of juvenile arrests for Index Offenses decreased by approximately 2 percent. Index Offense arrest rates for Wisconsin juveniles decreased nearly 4 percent from 1980 to 1987. Milwaukee County experienced trends similar to State trends, but the arrest rates were higher in this county than in the rest of the State. Ninety-five percent of the arrests for Index Offenses were for property crimes. Arrests for property offenses decreased during the 10-year period, while the number of arrests for violent offenses increased substantially. The number of juveniles admitted to Wisconsin correctional institutions decreased by approximately 19 percent from 1978 to 1987; however, the proportion of those admitted with previous experience in correctional institutions increased considerably in 1987. Admissions of juveniles for violent crime increased steadily from 1980 through 1985 but then decreased dramatically in 1986. 13 graphs, 1 table.
