Abstract
Part 1 describes the driver-impairing effects of alcohol, as well as illegal drugs, legal medication illegally used for the 'high,' legal drugs used according to doctor-prescribed doses, and over-the-counter medication. Particular attention is given to the dangers of driving under the influence of marijuana. Part 2 focuses on actions that individuals and communities can take to make the public aware of the dangers of drunk and drugged driving and reduce traffic fatalities and injuries. Following suggestions on how to obtain coverage from the news media, the book examines types of legislation that groups such as MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) have promoted. Also discussed are general highway safety factors ranging from speed limits to seat belts. Finally, the book surveys several effective educational approaches and offers guidelines on funding sources for citizen activist groups. Tables, glossary, selected materials used by the programs surveyed, resource list, and index.
