As shown in these conference presentations, art crime is often a hidden crime in Australia as many public galleries do not report theft that would show their security is inadequate and private individuals may not want to call attention to their collections.
Abstract
The legitimate art market often unknowingly passes on stolen art, and the criminal art market operates quite differently from the general market for stolen goods. Other problems associated with the art market include breach of copyright, forgery, authentication, and recovery. In exploring various facets of art crime, the conference presentations consider not only theft and fraud but also law enforcement issues, legal issues, aboriginal art, art theft prevention measures, the scale of art theft in Australia and elsewhere, and the monetary impact of art theft and art forgery on victims.
