The 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (P.L. 103-322) has created opportunities for law enforcement officials to receive extra funding for their departments.
Abstract
Many components of the bill require sheriff offices to compete for the funds through a proposal or grant writing procedure. Successful grant writers do not apply for just one grant; rather, they use the process of developing the grant application to identify several likely sources of funding and submit proposals on a regular basis. By responding positively to feedback they receive on each grant proposal, their chance of success is increased with each new application. Grantsmanship is a process, not an end product, and the preparation necessary to complete a grant application is often just as important as the grant application itself. Procedures are described for preparing a grant proposal, and funding sources are identified. 3 references
