This document presents the results of the Association of State Correctional Administrators June 2013 Current Issues in Corrections Survey.
Abstract
Each year the Association of State Correctional Administrators (ASCA) conducts a survey to identify the current issues faced by correctional agencies and the relative priority placed on each issue. In the June 2013 survey, ASCA members listed the following as the top four issues: 1) Population management, increasing inmate population; 2) Turnover of correctional staff/staff recruitment and retention; 3) Budget; and 4) Managing mental health populations. Survey participants were also asked to comment on their agency's efforts to address the top issues. Comments are included in the survey on strategies to address the issue of growing inmate populations, about staff recruitment and retention, on efforts to address the issue of staff recruitment and retention, and strategies to address budget constraint/shortfall issues. Additional information is presented on previously identified issues, such as PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Standards, cost of inmate health care, gang/security threat group management, and funding for reentry programs, among others.
