This brief provides judicial checklists and tools for the improvement of educational outcomes of children and youth in foster care.
Abstract
The first judicial checklist publication, "Asking the Right Questions: A Judicial Checklist to Ensure That the Educational Needs of Children and Youth in Foster Care are Being Address", was published in 2005 outlining the array of questions that may be asked in a courtroom with respect to the educational needs of children and youth in foster care. It is a tool that judges can use to make inquiries about the educational needs of children and youth under their jurisdiction, with the goal of positively impacting their educational outcomes and preparing them for successful adulthood. This second revised checklist publication was improved by the addition of two specific, user-friendly checklists: a checklist of the critical questions every judge should ask about education in every case and a checklist of critical questions every judge should ask about education and older youth. Other judicial checklists and tools include a tip sheet which provides an outline of the process judges can use to address educational issues from the bench and the original judicial Education Checklist (2005) in a new format that should prove to be more readily accessible as a bench tool. 24 endnotes
