Abstract
Nine facilities account for about 90 percent of all reported assaults on employees during the study period. Assaults typically occur in large (over 800 capacity) facilities in housing areas between 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. Over 80 percent of reported assaults involved physical contact without the use of weapons. Ninety-four percent of the assaults on employees involved one inmate, and 80.4 percent involved one employee. Of those employees assaulted, 86 percent were correction officers. Sixty-five percent of inmates involved in assaults were black (Blacks compose 53 percent of the inmate population.) A total of 76.6 percent of the inmates involved in assaults on employees were committed for violent offenses (About 65 percent of the inmate population is committed for violent offenses.) Of those inmates involved in employee assaults, 70.3 percent were below age 30 (Inmates under age 30 compose 53 percent of the inmate population.). For the period under study, 325 separate incidents of assault were reported, involving 422 employees and 334 inmates. Tabular data are provided. (Author summary modified)
