EXAMINATION OF INFORMATION AND REPORTS ON THIS POLICE HAZARD.
Abstract
FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION FIGURES INDICATE THAT THE POLICE PATROL CAR OFFICER IS IN THE GREATEST DANGER OF LOSING HIS LIFE IN THE LINE OF DUTY. DETECTIVES AND SPECIAL SSSIGNMENT OFFICERS HAVE THE NEXT HIGHEST INCIDENCE OF DEATHS IN THE LINE OF DUTY, WHILE THE FOOT PATROLMEN RANK THIRD. THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS FOR THE SIX YEARS BETWEEN 1963 AND 1968 INDICATED THAT POLICE OFFICERS ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE KILLED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE AN ARREST OR TO TRANSPORT PRISONERS. INTERRUPTIONS BY POLICE OFFICERS OF BURGLARIES OR ROBBERIES IN PROGRESS ACCOUNTED FOR ONE-THIRD OF POLICE FATALITIES. THERE IS LITTLE AVAILABLE INFORMATION ON NONFATAL ASSAULTS. HOWEVER, CRIMES AGAINST THE PUBLIC PEACE, SUCH AS DRUNKENNESS OR DISORDERLY CONDUCT APPEAR TO PRESENT THE HIGHEST RISK TO POLICE. THE AUTHOR FAVORS EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC AND SPECIAL POLICE TRAINING AS MEANS OF PREVENTING ASSAULTS ON POLICE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
