Assessment of alcohol and drug abuse problems with parolees has only recently become more formalized.
Abstract
This article describes an evolving assessment model used by the Brazos County Adult Probation Department, in Bryan, Texas. The assessment model focuses on three objectives: (1) determine the offender's level of involvement with specific drugs and alcohol, (2) distinguish between use, abuse, and dependence, and (3) make treatment and follow-up recommendations. To achieve these objectives, the model has components documenting case histories, interviews, testing, education, and evaluations. The assessment process itself begins with identification and referral, then moves on to screening evaluations and diagnostic evaluations. The process ends with treatment recommendations. 36 references
