Screening data on arrested youth processed at the Hillsborough County, Florida, Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) in November 1993 provided support for the effectiveness of the Detention Risk Assessment Instrument (DRAI) in differentiating youth with varying degrees of self-reported substance use and problems in the areas of recreation and family relations.
Abstract
Data were obtained not only from the DRAI but also from the Problem Oriented Screening Instrument for Teenagers developed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Results differentiated youths released to the community unsupervised, youths placed on home detention, and youths placed in secure detention. Juveniles in secure detention had the most problems in self- reported marijuana and alcohol use during the past year and experienced potential problems in the areas of leisure and family relations. Unsupervised youths exhibited the fewest problems in these domains, and youths on home detention reflected an intermediate level of problem. Service delivery and policy implications of the analysis findings are examined. Appendixes contain additional information on components of the JAC's information system and the DRAI. 31 references and 7 tables
