COUNSELING AND WORK-STUDY PROGRAM AVAILABLE FROM 1969 TO 1971 TO SELECTED OFFENDERS AGED 17-21 AT FRICOT RANCH SCHOOL, CALIFORNIA.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM EVALUATION INCLUDES POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS AND MOVEMENT STATISTICS, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, PRE- AND POST- PROGRAM ATTITUDINAL MEASUREMENTS, STUDENT VIEWS REGARDING THE PROGRAM, AND POST-RELEASE PERFORMANCE. NEARLY THREE-FOURTHS OF THE STUDENTS ADMITTED COMPLETED THE PROGRAM, FAVORABLE ATTITUDE CHANGES OCCURRED, AND A LOW RATE OF PAROLE VIOLATIONS WAS OBSERVED FOR PROGRAM RELEASEES. ALMOST ALL OF THE STUDENTS ATTENDED JUNIOR COLLEGE FULL-TIME IN THE COMMUNITY PRIOR TO PAROLE, AND AFTER RELEASE PAROLE SIXTY PERCENT OF THOSE WHO COMPLETED THE PROGRAM WENT ON TO ATTEND COMMUNITY COLLEGES. ONE OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS MADE IS THAT SIMILAR FUTURE PROGRAMS BE SUPPLEMENTED BY A POST-RELEASE PHASE INCLUDING A HALFWAY HOUSE OR RESIDENTIAL CENTER TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT STRUCTURE AND GUIDANCE FOR PERSONS WHO CONTINUE WITH COLLEGE. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES CHARTS ON BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND A STUDENT ATTITUDINAL QUESTIONNAIRE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
