THE D.C. DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS COLLECTED FIGURES ON CRIME RATES FOR AN 18-MONTH PERIOD FROM JANUARY 1975 THROUGH JUNE 1976. RESULTS SHOW A REDUCTION, BUT RATES ARE EXPECTED TO STABILIZE.
Abstract
THE METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RECORDING DATA ON REPORTED CRIMES. BOTH SERIOUS OFFENSES AND LESS SERIOUS OFFENSES (EXCLUDING TRAFFIC CITATIONS) INCREASED BY 2.9 PERCENT FROM 1973 TO 1974 AND BY 4.3 PERCENT FROM 1974 TO 1975. MONTHLY ADULT ARREST RATES ROSE FROM 2,325 IN 1975 TO 2,444 IN 1976. IN 1975, THE BAIL AGENCY WAS HANDLING CRIMINAL CASES AT A RATE OF 1,754 PER MONTH. IN 1976, THE RATE WAS 1,655 PER MONTH. SIXTY PERCENT OF ALL CASES HANDLED BY THE BAIL AGENCY RESULTED IN RELEASE ON PERSONAL RECOGNIZANCE. THE NUMBER OF CASES BROUGHT TO THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE ROSE IN 1973 AND 1974 BUT DECREASED SLIGHTLY IN 1975. IN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS OF 1975, COURTS IMPOSED 1,913 ADULT SENTENCES ON 1,471 PERSONS (EXCLUDING 28 LIFE SENTENCES). DURING THE SAME PERIOD, 295 YOUTH SENTENCES WERE IMPOSED. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SENTENCES INCREASED BETWEEN 1975 AND 1976. SLIGHTLY FEWER HEARINGS AND GRANTS WERE ISSUED, AND INSTITUTIONAL RESIDENTS WERE LEAVING FOR PAROLE AT A LOWER RATE DURING THE STUDY PERIOD THAN BEFORE. SIGNIFICANT EVENTS INCLUDED THE INITIATION OF OPERATION DOORSTOP (DETENTION SERVICE) AND REVISION OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA'S BAIL REFORM ACT. (DEP)
