FINAL REPORT ON A PROJECT TO REDUCE THE OCCURRENCE OF SERIOUS CRIME IN THE ATLANTA AREA BY TWENTY PERCENT OVER A FIVE YEAR PERIOD, UNDER THE CRIME ANALYSIS TEAM AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE COORDINATING COUNCIL.
Abstract
THIS PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN AS PART OF THE LEAA-SPONSORED HIGH IMPACT CITIES PROGRAM IN 1971. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE PROJECT GOALS, PROVISIONS WERE MADE FOR CROSS JURISDICTIONAL, COORDINATED CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNING FOR ATLANTA, AND FULTON AND DEKALB COUNTIES. THIS FUNCTION WAS ASSIGNED TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE COORDINATING COUNCIL. THE CRIME ANALYSIS TEAM WAS CHARGED WITH MONITORING AND EVALUATING USE OF FEDERAL FUNDS. METHODOLOGY INVOLVED TREND ANALYSES OF THE FIVE IMPACT CRIMES OF HOMICIDE, RAPE, ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS, AND BURGLARY. THE RESULTS OF THE PROJECT SHOW THAT WHILE THE RATE OF IMPACT CRIMES IS STILL INCREASING SLIGHTLY, THE RATE OF INCREASE HAS BEEN SLOWED SUBSTANTIALLY BELOW THE PROJECTED RATE.
