Abstract
THE ATLANTA STREET ACADEMY ATTEMPTS TO AID OFFENDERS AND POTENTIAL OFFENDERS TO PASS A HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY TEST. THE PROJECT GOAL IS TO PREVENT 50 PERCENT OF 325 YOUTHS ENROLLED IN THE STREET ACADEMY FOR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS, FROM COMMITTING A TARGET CRIME WITHIN ONE YEAR AFTER COMPLETION OF THE SIX MONTH PERIOD. AT LEAST 200 OF THE 325 ANTICIAPTED ENROLEES WERE TO BE TARGET OFFENDERS. THE PROGRAM GOAL FOR REDUCTION IN OFFENSES WAS FOUND TO BE MET SINCE ONLY ONE TARGET CRIME WAS COMMITTED BY A TARGET OFFENDER AFTER ENROLLMENT. HOWEVER, THE ENROLLMENT WAS ONLY 38 PERCENT OF THE REQUIRED NUMBER, AND THE PROPORTION OF TARGET OFFENDERS AND POTENTIAL OFFENDERS WAS EXCEEDINGLY DIFFERENT THAN THE PLANNED PROPORTION. IT WAS ALSO ESTIMATED THAT THE NUMBER OF ENROLEES PASSING THE EQUIVALENCY TEST WOULD FALL BELOW THE DESIRED LEVEL. ATTENDANCE RATES FOR THE LATEST QUARTER WERE ALSO UNSATISTFACTORY. A LACK OF A CONTROL GROUP AND LACK OF SURVEYS OF PARENTS AND ENROLLEES WERE CITED AS PROJECT LIMITATIONS. ENROLLMENT, ATTENDANCE, AND EQUIVALENCY TEST DATA ARE INCLUDED.
