A STUDY TO DETERMINE IF THE AWARENESS OF INCONSISTENCIES BETWEEN HIGHLY RANKED VALUES AND RELATED ATTITUDES COULD CAUSE A CHANGE IN THOSE ATTITUDES, AS A POSSIBLE ROUTE TO BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION.
Abstract
SUBJECTS OF THE STUDY WERE ADJUDICATED MALE ADOLESCENTS AT TWO BOYS' CAMPS IN KENTUCKY. IT WAS ATTEMPTED TO DEMONSTRATE TO THE SUBJECTS THAT THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARD PERSONS AND PROPERTY WERE INCONSISTENT WITH THEIR VALUES OF FREEDOM. THIS ATTEMPT TO PRODUCE DISSONANCE DID NOT PRODUCE A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN ATTITUDES. SEVERAL EXPLANATIONS FOR THE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THESE RESEARCH RESULTS AND THEORY ARE PROPOSED. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS WAS EMPLOYED.
