THIS REPORT IS THE RESULT OF A SURVEY OF 2,525 COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT DISPOSITION DOCUMENTS COVERING THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 1973 IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY AND CORRECT ERRORS IN TRANSACTION RECORDS.
Abstract
ERRORS WERE FOUND IN 23 PERCENT OF THESE DOCUMENTS. FOURTEEN PERCENT OF THE ERRORS LOCATED COULD EXERT A DIRECT AND ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM; THIS REPRESENTS MORE THAN FOUR PERCENT OF ALL DOCUMENTS AUDITED. TWENTY-SIX PERCENT OF THE ERRORS AFFECTED DEFENDANT IDENTIFIERS, SUCH AS NAME AND COURT NUMBER. A STUDY OF COURT CONTINUANCES INDICATED THAT 67 PERCENT, OR 1,446, OF THE DISPOSITION DOCUMENTS INVOLVED ONE OR MORE CONTINUANCES. CONTRARY TO SECTION 1050 OF THE CALIFORNIA PENAL CODE, REASONS FOR CONTINUANCES WERE NOT STATED IN THE CRIMINAL MINUTE ORDERS FOR 2,0001 REQUESTS, OR 41 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL CONTINUANCES.
